Law Enforcement & Government Requests for Information or Records

Student Information or Records

Should individuals representing themselves as law enforcement officers or other government agents approach you, with or without any form of written authorization, and ask you for information or records regarding a student or former student, do not disclose the information or records.  Contact Nicole Rovig or Traci Gulick in the Registrar's Office at 355-3300.  If they are not available, contact Radhika Pasricha or Michael Kiley in the Office of the General Counsel at 353-3530.

 Computer and/or Library Information or Records

Should individuals representing themselves as law enforcement officers or other government agents approach you, with or without any form of written authorization, and ask you to provide (a) access to, or copies of, the content of electronic communications; (b) access to, or copies of, user records; (c) any information or records about users of or traffic on the MSU computer network; or (d) any information or records regarding use of library materials, do not disclose the information or records.  Contact either Tom Davis (computer information/records) at 353-6727 or Cliff Haka (library information/records) at 355-2341.  If they are unavailable, contact David Gift, Vice Provost for Libraries, Computing, and Technology, at 353-0722. 

Employee Information or Records

Should individuals representing themselves as law enforcement officers or other government agents approach you, with or without written authorization, and ask you for information or records regarding a University staff employee or employees, do not disclose the information or records.  Contact Employee Records in Human Resources at 353-4330.  Requests for faculty, academic staff, or graduate assistant information or records should be directed to Academic Records in Human Resources at 355-1526. 

Contacts from law enforcement officers or other government agents related to security clearance or background checks for University employees should be handled in coordination with the above offices or the Office of the General Counsel (353-3530).

 Other Information or Records

Should individuals representing themselves as law enforcement officers or other government agents approach you, with or without written authorization, requesting any information or records that have not been described above, contact Michael Kiley, Associate General Counsel, at 353-3530.  If he is unavailable, contact Radhika Pasricha or Kristine Zayko in the Office of the General Counsel at 353-3530. 

 Subpoenas and Search Warrants

If you receive a subpoena for University documents, promptly contact Michael Kiley or Theresa Kelley in the Office of the General Counsel at 353-3530.  If you are served with a search warrant, upon you or your immediately available supervisor being satisfied that the officer is an authorized representative of the identified law enforcement agency, cooperate in providing the documents and/or things which are sought.  As soon as is possible, you or your supervisor should inform an attorney in the Office of the General Counsel regarding the matter (353-3530).

 Emergencies

Should any employee reasonably believe that he or she has information about an emergency involving immediate danger of death or serious physical injury or substantial property damage, that person should contact the MSU Police Department immediately at 355-2221 or by dialing 911.
