About the Office of the General Counsel

 

The Office of the General Counsel provides legal advice and representation to the University through its President, Board of Trustees, and administration on a broad array of legal issues affecting a modern, public research institution. Our services include advice and counsel on all matters that have legal significance for the University, including contract review, advice regarding state and federal laws, and legal workshops and educational programs. The Office of the General Counsel represents the University with respect to all litigation and supervises all outside legal services provided to the University to assure they meet the highest standards.

If you need advice regarding a University-related legal matter, you may:

  1. Contact our main office at 517-353-3530.  Our staff will request background information about your issue to assist in directing you to the appropriate attorney; or

  2. Review the Attorney Practice Areas section and contact them directly.

For personal matters

The Office of the General Counsel represents the University, including individual employees when acting in the good faith performance of assigned duties. For more information, please review "Indemnification" under Legal Topics and FAQs. 

For assistance on personal legal matters, students may contact ASMSU Legal Services.

Students and employees may also utilize the State Bar of Michigan Lawyer Referral Service or contact one of the many legal aid offices in the state.

Engaging outside counsel

OGC is responsible for determining whether to retain outside counsel for a specific legal matter.  OGC must approve of and engage all outside counsel.

OGC may retain outside counsel if the matter:

  1. Requires specialized legal expertise outside of OGC attorneys' practice areas;

  2. Requires advice regarding another state or country's laws; or

  3. Exceeds OGC's capacity to handle the matter due to high demand.
